How to figure out what flavor/version of linux you are on

I ssh to alot of different devices and sometimes…I get lost on which one is using what.  So I stumbled on this article that covers how to tel (cat /etc/issue and cat/etc/*release).  Typically I do uname -a, but that doesn’t always give me a good idea of ubuntu vs mint vs etc system.
